Story - To be A 'Dark Secret'
In 1201, the adventurous young Rus left his home in Novgorod, worked his way down the Dnieper as a boatsman and guard against the rapacious Pechenegs, and crossed the Black Sea to Constantinople. There, in early 1202, as was his intention from the start, he joined Varangian Guard, swearing an Oath of Fealty to the Emperor.
His enormous stature was meant he was soon became a favourite, imposing, personal bodyguard of Emperor Alexios himself. A year a palace duty passed before the arrival of the Fourth Crusade.
Thus it was on the night of the first major assault on the city, as his fellow guardman distinguished themselves in defence of the walls, Rosboroda found himself as reluctant but dutiful bodyguard as Alexios, taking his favourite daughter and as much portable treasure as he could manage, fled the city in the middle of the night.
The party fled to Thrace. Alexios made some weak attempts to organise resistance against the Franks, to no effect.
Eventually (in 1204) the exiles were joined by Alexios V, who has himself fled the fall of Constantinople. Well received, Alexios V is married to Alexios's daughter. But Alexios's jealousy boils over, and Rosboroda is ordered to blind Alexios V, who is then left to the Franks as Alexios III again flees to Thessaly.
Pursued by a Frankish army, Alexios surrenders the party to Marquis Boniface of Montferrat, who was establishing himself as ruler of the Kingdom of Thessalonica. Despite being well looked after, Alexios has himself, Rosboroda and party escape from Boniface's house arrest, but they are soon recaptured, with Rosboroda having to stay with the cowardly ex-emperor. The group are sent to more secure (and distant) confinement in Montferrat, Boniface's home.
Five years of confinement later, Alexios's retinue is ransomed to Theodore I Laskaris of the Empire of Nicaea. His Varangian Guard remnants are less than pleased to see Rosboroda, who has aquired a reputation for cowardice and treachery by association. Rosboroda's protestations are seen as dissembling.
Even here, Alexios conspires against his son-in-law (Theodore) after the latter refused to recognize Alexios' authority. Alexios, again with the reluctant Rosboroda, sought and received the support of Kay Khusrau I, the Sultan of Rüm. Alexios and Rosboroda joined the turkish army to attack Theodore. In the battle that followed (Battle of Antioch on the Maeander River, 1211), the sultan was defeated and killed. Rosboroda fought to hold up the Byzantines while Alexios (as usual) fled the field, but was overwhelmed, and both were captured by Theodore Lascaris.
Alexios and Rosboroda were relegated to a monastery at Nicaea. Alexios died there later in 1211, and Rosboroda, at last free of his vow, was smuggled out the country by the monks.
He has since been making his living as a mercenary/bodyguard, making his way to Cilicia as the nearest place that's low on Turks, Franks, Varangians and Byzantines.
